Lincoln Heights Jail
This is a adaptive reuse project of the Lincoln Heights Jail in downtown Los Angeles. The project is meant to revitalize the abandoned building and create a new space for Homeboy Industries, an program that helps re-habilitate formerly incarcerated people and former gang members. This non-profit program helps members join the workforce and better their lives. The interventon was created using a series of form finding exercises that encoorporated both digital and analog tools.
Fabrication
After the form was created digitally, analog tools were used to create the form physically. By slicing the model in rhino to the dimensions of the lumber, templates were created to map out the rough shapes of each 3/4 inch layer. The bandsaw was used to cut out the shapes from the templates. Next the shapes of the carves were sketched in and carved using a rotary tool. After layers were stacked together, a dremel was used to blend the seams and fine-tune the details.
